Guerino is a nationally touring standup comedian based in Chicago who has been credited as a “comedian-producer-genius” by Chicago Reader and has opened for comic greats James Adomian, Cameron Esposito, Brad Loekle and Beth Stelling. He is the creator of Stand Out: The National Queer Comedy Search which partnered with The Advocate Magazine to give queer comedians national exposure, Outloud Chicago which for over three years has brought queer inclusive entertainment to mainstream Chicago venues and The Rainbow Connection Queer Comedy Tour which combined gay, lesbian, bi and trans comedians for a cross-country tour. Mike Lebovitz. Lebovitz’s comedy career began at the age of six with clowning classes at the local JCC. He’s been delighting and confounding audiences big and small ever since with his offbeat yet accessible brand of humor. As an accomplished actor, director and writer, Lebovitz draws from a broad range of disciplines in constructing his act, using outlandish viewpoints and subversive turns-of-phrase to highlight the inherent absurdity of being. He doesn’t point out life’s quirks; he revels in them. After earning a BA in Theater Performance from Oberlin College, Lebovitz trained at both the Annoyance and iO Theaters, where he was a member of the house teams Ned Beatty and Roadster from 2002-2007. He is also a member of Comedians You Should Know, Chicago’s premiere stand-up comedy collective, whose debut CD recently topped out as the #1 selling comedy album on iTunes.

Stand Out: Submission Guidelines

Simply submit a youtube link to a clip of between 4 and 6 minutes of continual comedy performance and include a hi res photo and 100-300 word bio to outloudchicago@gmail.com. Submission deadline will be July 31st. Please only submit if you are available to come to Chicago September 24th to compete at the live event. stand out, queer, comedy, search

Here’s some more info regarding why we’re asking for such specific submission guidelines:

Why a 4-6 minute continual comedy performance youtube clip? Because 6 minutes should be plenty of time to shine and you won’t be able to edit your live performance so you shouldn’t edit your clip. We ask for youtube because your video will be embedded on multiple sites (don’t apply if you’re shy.) This is to your benefit though because people can look at your youtube page afterward if they so choose.

Why a 100-300 word bio? Tell us about yourself! But, you know, not your whole life story. Where are you from? How long, if at all, have you been performing? Are you gay, bi, straight, trans? Your bio will be next to your clip and photo so the more concise, the more you will stand out.

Why a hi-res photo? Don’t be alarmed, we are not talking in code. Hi-res just means high resolution because we want to see a big, clear photo of your beautiful self. Notice we didn’t say “headshot.” You don’t need a professional photo, but you are more than welcome to use one if you have it. In other words, we won’t hold it against you if your mom takes your picture. This is a search for talent, not an invite-only contest for professionals.

Timeline:

Submissions: Start now and end July 31st. You’ll receive an email saying we received your materials.

The Elimination Round: 15 comedians will compete via online voting for 8 slots in the live competition. Voting starts on August 6th and ends on August 20th. You can vote once a day and so can your mom.

Viewing Party: On August 28th Absolut vodka and Sidetrack The Video Bar will be hosting the announcement of which comedians will advance to the next round of competition at Sidetrack 3349 N Halsted. Throughout the night, comedian clips will be playing on tvs in the bar and Absolut vodka will be passing sponsored drinks. The 8 contestants who advance to the live competition will be announced by the end of the night.

Live Competition: Tuesday September 24th, Zanies and Outloud Chicago host the live competition starting at 8:30pm at 1548 N Wells hosted by Adam Guerino and judged by Bert Haas, Jami Smith and Molly Adams.

Queer Comedy (Contest) at Zanies Tuesday October 25th

Queer Comedy Contest hosted by Adam Guerino!

Queer Comedy at Zanies, presented by OutLoud Chicago, aims to find safe spaces for queer audiences and safe stages for queer performers. The first show, in July of 2011, created a stage for queer comedy in the mainstream. While Zanies features experienced queer comedians, the established nature of the historic club makes it difficult to give stage-time to newer comedians. For queer comedians, there is a large divide between starting out and being featured. But, that’s about to change.

At the Queer Comedy (Contest) at Zanies on Tuesday October 25th,OutLoud Chicago is looking for queer comedians who are ready and willing for the next stage. Hosted by Queer Comedy at Zanies creator Adam Guerino, Zanies will enlist judges Nellie Huggins (regular contributor to Gaper’s Block, producer)Dave Odd (Edge Comedy Club creator/booker/producer) and Cynthia Levin (BET, Comedy Central, national headliner and personal stand-up comedy coach.)

The contest will feature eight comedians, each doing eight minute sets: Guerino will also be teaching audience classes and presenting awards for “most supportive hoot and hollerer,” “best heckler” and “best offended gasp trailed by nervous laughter.” At the end of the night, stand-up vet and judge Cynthia Levin will headline the show while the votes are tallied. The contest winners are decided based upon audience and judge vote.

Each contestant will receive professional, instant feedback after their set, as well as photos and video of their performance. The contest will feature three prizes: first, second and third place will receive a comedy workshop, publicity bootcamp and first prize will receive a paid feature spot in the next Queer Comedy at Zanies show, on Tuesday November 22nd and will be interviewed about their victory and awesomeness in Gaper’s Block.

Audience members and comedians  will see what it takes to get booked in the best rooms in the city. The contest will be held on Tuesday October 25th at 9:30pm at Zanies Comedy Club (1548 N Wells). Doors open at 9pm, tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door with 2 drink minimum.

Contestants include:

Blogger and novelist of “The Adventures of Sissy Van Dyke,” Sissy Van Dyke.

Veteran comedian, former member of “Hysterical Women” Julie Paradise.

Graduate of levels one and two of the comedy class “The Feminine Comique,” Caitlin Bergh.
