June Music Playlist

My June music playlist this month reflects my birthday so it should reek of self reflection and direction. Even more than everything else I do. Enjoy!

Brendan Benson–What I’m Looking For. I found this song on a cute boy’s myspace page that I used to stalk. This was, (when did people use myspace?) like 5 years ago. So everytime I’d go on his page, this song would cue up. That being said, it has been my birthday anthem all week. To me, the song is all about not being afraid to enter things naively.

Anna Nalick  – Consider This. Angry and self-assured. Usually these two don’t go together well but I really enjoy this style. It reminds me of Fiona Apple meets old-school No Doubt. What resonates most with me is the “If you’re trying to change me” repetition. It’s like a sarcastic way to say, “I wouldn’t if I were you, it won’t work so don’t waste both our time.”

Lily Frost — Enchantment. “I’ll be a lady if you be a gentleman” is such a great lyric. This folk-pop song is so self-aware, I love it. It’s making fun of whimsical fantastical romantic expectations with a sardonic sneer.

The Weepies — Nobody Knows Me At All. The sadder part of the birthday realizations–self pity. I know that everyone feels a little bit lonely on their bday but I thought this was a sweet way to put it.

Matt Costa — Mr. Pitiful. A very cute song and an even cuter music video. This guy is dorky in all the sexiest ways.

MIA — Come Around. I’ve never been one to jump on the MIA bandwagon but I love the shit out of this song.

Sneaky Sound System — We Love. It’s just a fun song, what do you want from me?

Peaches — Hit It Hard. A great fusion of electronica and grunge and great soundtrack for dancing.

Die Antwoord — Rich Bitch. I changed my mind, can this song be my birthday anthem instead? No? OK, fine, here’s to the next year…
